What is the APC Capability Assessment?

The practical clinical examination on your path to Australian physiotherapy registration.

The APC Capability Assessment is the fourth stage of the Australian Physiotherapy Council’s APEP pathway for internationally qualified physiotherapists: after Eligibility Assessment, Cultural Safety Training and the Written Assessment. It replaced the older in-person clinical exam when APC moved to the current APEP structure.

It’s a 1.5-hour, open-book, oral exam conducted remotely over video call. An assessor works through clinical scenarios with you, covering patient assessment, clinical reasoning, treatment planning, communication and professional behaviour, and you talk through your reasoning in real time rather than submitting written evidence or performing physical stations.

Passing the Capability Assessment moves you to the final stage: the one-day Clinical Workshop in Melbourne. Only after that does APC certify you for AHPRA registration. For the full pathway, fee-by-fee, see our APC Registration guide, or read the Australia Registration overview for the bigger picture on eligibility, timeline and career.

What the Assessor Actually Asks

Five clinical reasoning domains come up across the 1.5-hour conversation, not physical stations, but talked-through scenarios.

Patient Assessment

Talk through how you’d take a history, what you’d examine, and how you’d identify impairments and activity limitations from a case vignette.

Clinical Reasoning

Explain how you’d analyse findings, reach a physiotherapy diagnosis, and justify an evidence-based treatment plan: out loud, under questioning.

Treatment & Management

Describe the treatment techniques, manual therapy and exercise prescription you’d choose, and why, for the scenario presented.

Communication

Show how you’d explain a diagnosis or plan to a patient or carer: assessors listen for clarity and cultural sensitivity in your phrasing.

Professional Behaviour

Discuss ethical practice, informed consent and how the Australian healthcare context shapes your decisions in the scenario.

Mistakes That Cost You a Second AUD 2,928 Attempt

A resit means paying the fee again and losing weeks off your timeline. These are the reasons we see candidates end up resitting.

1

Preparing like it’s a written exam

Reading textbooks won’t help if you freeze when asked to reason out loud. Practise mock scenarios verbally with a peer or mentor, not just silent revision.

2

Not using the “open-book” allowance

You’re permitted approved reference material during the call. Candidates who don’t rehearse using it efficiently waste time fumbling instead of citing it smoothly.

3

Booking it before you’re actually ready

A resit costs the fee again and adds weeks to your timeline. Treat your Written Assessment prep and Capability Assessment prep as continuous, not two separate sprints.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to what Indian physiotherapists ask us most about the Capability Assessment.

It’s fully remote: a 1.5-hour oral exam conducted over video call. You do not need to travel to Australia for this stage; the only in-person requirement in the whole APEP pathway is the one-day Clinical Workshop that comes after it.

No. Older guidance described a portfolio-based, reflective-writing process, but APC’s current APEP pathway replaced this with a live oral exam. You don’t submit documents for this stage: you talk through clinical scenarios with an assessor in real time.

Internationally qualified physiotherapists who have passed the APC Written Assessment and are progressing through the APEP pathway to full registration in Australia.

Musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiorespiratory physiotherapy scenarios, alongside professional behaviour, communication and evidence-based practice: all discussed verbally rather than tested through written or practical stations.

Rehearse talking through clinical reasoning out loud with a peer or mentor, get comfortable citing approved reference material quickly during the open-book format, and review Australian physiotherapy practice standards rather than just Indian clinical conventions.

APC gives feedback on the areas you struggled with, and you can rebook for a further fee. Since it’s conversational rather than document-based, most candidates who don’t pass the first time benefit from mock oral sessions before resitting rather than more reading.

How Akademyfi Preps You for the Capability Assessment

This is a live 1.5-hour oral exam, not a document you submit, and reading around the topics silently won’t prepare you for talking through clinical reasoning in real time. We run mock oral sessions with you so the video-call format and pacing genuinely aren’t a surprise on the day.

Since it’s open-book, we also help you practise citing approved references smoothly mid-conversation instead of fumbling for them while an assessor waits. And we help you time this stage against your Written Assessment result, booking it once you’re genuinely ready rather than slotting it into a fixed generic schedule.

One Akademyfi consultant runs your mock sessions until the format feels routine.

We help you book this stage when your preparation is actually ready, not before.
