What the Written Assessment Actually Tests

The first exam stage of the APEP pathway, and the first place candidates lose months to a missed sitting.

The APC Written Assessment is a computer-based multiple-choice exam administered by the Australian Physiotherapy Council. It’s the first exam stage of the APEP pathway, sat after your Eligibility Assessment and Cultural Safety Training are complete. For the full six-stage pathway, fees at every stage and how the Written Assessment fits alongside Capability Assessment and the Clinical Workshop, see our complete APC registration guide.

The assessment tests your clinical knowledge and theoretical understanding across all major physiotherapy domains against the Australian standard for entry-level practice, not the Indian curriculum you trained on. That distinction is where most preparation time gets wasted.

APC confirms your degree and work history, then you complete the online Cultural Safety module.

Now: Written Assessment

Computer-based MCQ exam at Pearson VUE. Held four times a year. Fee AUD 2,017.

After: Capability + Workshop

A remote oral exam, then a one-day Clinical Workshop in Melbourne, followed by AHPRA registration.

The Five Domains We Prep You On

Every Written Assessment question falls into one of these areas. Two of them are where Indian-trained candidates consistently drop marks.

Musculoskeletal

Orthopaedic physiotherapy, spinal assessment, joint mobilisation, exercise prescription, sports injuries and post-surgical rehabilitation.

Neurological

Stroke rehab, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, motor control and neurodevelopmental techniques.

Cardiopulmonary

Cardiac rehabilitation, respiratory therapy, ICU physiotherapy, COPD management and post-operative care.

Paediatrics & Geriatrics

Developmental conditions, ageing-related disorders, falls prevention and age-appropriate rehabilitation strategies.

Professional Practice

Ethics, evidence-based practice, patient-centred care, interprofessional collaboration and Australian healthcare context.

Written and reviewed by Akademyfi’s physiotherapy licensing advisors, who work full-time on registration for Indian physiotherapists across the UAE, Australia, the UK and the wider Gulf. Every fee, eligibility rule and timeline on this page is checked against the official regulator’s own guidance before publishing. If a regulator changes its process, treat their website as the final word and tell us so we can update this page. Last updated: August 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Indian physiotherapists ask us before booking their Written Assessment.

Every internationally qualified physiotherapist who clears APC’s Eligibility Assessment and Cultural Safety Training needs to sit it. It’s a fixed part of the APEP pathway, there’s no experience level or postgraduate degree that exempts you from it.

Musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiopulmonary, paediatric and geriatric physiotherapy, plus professional practice, ethics and evidence-based care. See the five domains above for what we focus your prep on.

APC’s published pass mark is typically in the 60 to 65 percent range, though the exact figure can be adjusted per sitting. We confirm the current criteria with you as part of your prep plan rather than quoting a fixed number here.

Yes. We build your study plan around the actual APC exam calendar, identify which of the five domains you’re weakest in, and work through MCQ practice with you domain by domain rather than handing you a generic reading list. Book a free consultation to get started.

Some candidates do pass through self-study alone. Where we add the most value is timing (the exam only runs four times a year, so a missed sitting costs months) and domain diagnosis, since most Indian-trained candidates don’t realise how thin their cardiopulmonary and paediatric knowledge is until they’re tested on it.

The fee is AUD 2,017. It’s held four times a year, so if you miss a sitting or don’t pass, you may be waiting for the next available date rather than resitting immediately. Plan your prep timeline around the actual exam calendar, not just your own readiness.

Passing moves you to the remote Capability Assessment, a 1.5-hour open-book oral exam over video call, and then the one-day Clinical Workshop in Melbourne, the only stage requiring travel to Australia.

Common Mistakes Preparing for the Written Assessment

1

Studying Indian clinical guidelines instead of Australian ones

Treatment conventions and terminology differ. Base your revision on Australian physiotherapy standards and evidence-based guidelines, not the textbooks you used in college.

2

Ignoring the exam calendar

The assessment only runs four times a year. Missing a sitting because you weren’t ready in time can cost you several months, not weeks: plan backward from the actual exam dates.

3

Skipping weaker domains

Candidates often over-prepare musculoskeletal content (most familiar from Indian practice) and under-prepare cardiopulmonary and paediatric/geriatric sections, where marks are lost unnecessarily.

How Akademyfi Preps You for the Written Assessment

The Written Assessment only runs four times a year, so missing a sitting costs you months rather than weeks, which makes generic revision plans risky. Akademyfi builds your prep timeline backward from the next actual exam date, and points you toward Australia-specific clinical guidelines rather than the Indian-curriculum material most candidates default to.

We also help identify where your preparation is genuinely thin. Cardiopulmonary and paediatric domains are a common gap for Indian-trained physiotherapists specifically, since clinical exposure back home skews differently than what APC’s vignette-style questions expect.

One Akademyfi consultant builds your study plan around the real exam calendar, not a generic timeline.

We flag your weakest clinical domains before exam day, not after your results.

Domain-by-domain MCQ practice against Australian clinical guidelines, not Indian-curriculum textbooks.
