Can Indian BPT Graduates Register as Physiotherapists in Australia?

Yes, but not directly. An Indian BPT or MPT degree is not automatically recognised in Australia the way it is in, say, the UK’s documentation-only HCPC route. Instead, your qualification has to go through a formal equivalency check before you’re allowed to register.

In practice, that means your degree moves through one pathway: Indian BPT/MPT qualification → APC Eligibility Assessment → APEP (Cultural Safety, Written Assessment, Capability Assessment, Clinical Workshop) → APC Certificate → AHPRA registration. Every internationally trained physiotherapist goes through this same sequence; there’s no shortcut based on years of experience or a postgraduate degree alone.

We cover the country-level view on this page, and the full assessment-by-assessment breakdown, fees and preparation guidance on our APC Registration guide.

Why Indian Physiotherapists Choose Australia

Australia combines competitive salaries, career growth, and an exceptional quality of life, making it a top destination for ambitious physiotherapists.

Excellent Salary

Earn AUD 70,000–95,000/year as a new graduate, with experienced physios earning AUD 95,000–120,000+. Superannuation (retirement savings) adds another 11.5% on top.

Skilled Migration Pathway

Physiotherapy sits on Australia’s Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), which opens the door to skilled migration visas once you’re AHPRA-registered and working. How quickly that turns into permanent residency depends on your points score, visa subclass and state or employer nomination, so we treat this as something to plan for rather than a fixed timeline.

High Quality of Life

Consistently ranked among the world’s most liveable cities, Australia offers a safe, multicultural environment with excellent public services and a warm, welcoming community.

APC, AHPRA and PBA: Who Does What

Three bodies stand between you and your Australian registration. Knowing which one does what saves you from applying to the wrong authority at the wrong time.

APC

Australian Physiotherapy Council

Assesses overseas-qualified physiotherapists through the APEP pathway. Your first point of contact for Australian registration.

Learn about APC
AHPRA

Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency

Grants final registration to practise physiotherapy across all Australian states and territories once APC assessment is approved.

Learn about AHPRA
PBA

Physiotherapy Board of Australia

Sets standards of practice for physiotherapists in Australia. Works under AHPRA to regulate the profession and protect the public.

How the APC/APEP Registration Process Works

The Australian Physiotherapy Examination Pathway (APEP) is the standard route for overseas-qualified physiotherapists. It runs in a fixed order, five assessment stages followed by AHPRA registration.

1

Eligibility Assessment

APC reviews your BPT/MPT degree and work history to confirm you can enter APEP. Roughly 4–8 weeks.

2

Cultural Safety Training

A self-paced online module on respectful, culturally safe practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

3

Written Assessment

A computer-based clinical knowledge exam, sat at Pearson VUE test centres. Most candidates prepare for 3–4 months.

4

Capability Assessment

A live, open-book oral exam over video call testing clinical reasoning. No travel needed, you can sit it from India.

5

Clinical Workshop

A one-day, in-person session at APC’s Simulation Lab in Melbourne, the only stage that requires travel to Australia.

6

AHPRA Registration

With your APC certificate in hand, you apply to AHPRA for the licence that lets you legally practise anywhere in Australia.

This is the overview. For the exact fee at each stage, current preparation timelines and what each assessment actually involves, see our full APC Registration guide.

Are You Eligible for APC/APEP?

This is a quick self-check, not the full APC criteria. Broadly, you’re a realistic candidate for APEP if you have:

BPT or MPT from a recognised Indian university (full-time degree programme)

Clinical experience after your BPT/MPT, documented by an employer (how much you need depends on your overall profile, not a fixed number)

IELTS 7.0 overall with no individual band below 7.0, or OET Grade B in all sections

Good standing with your state or national physiotherapy council in India, no fitness-to-practise concerns

Meeting these doesn’t guarantee an APC pass, and not meeting one of them doesn’t always rule you out. It depends on the specifics of your file, which is exactly what a free eligibility check is for.

Documents & Full Requirements

APC works from a specific document checklist, degree certificates, transcripts, registration proof and English scores all need particular formats and certification. Rather than duplicate that list here, we keep the definitive version on our APC Registration page so it stays accurate as APC updates its requirements.

5 Mistakes That Can Cost You Time and Money

The bigger-picture planning mistakes we see cost Indian physiotherapists the most, beyond the assessment-specific errors covered in our APC guide.

1

Starting the process without a documented eligibility check

Some applicants pay the APC Eligibility Assessment fee before confirming their documents will actually meet APC’s certification format. A short review beforehand catches most of these issues for free.

2

Working from outdated, pre-2025 APEP information

APC restructured the pathway in 2025: the Capability Assessment moved remote and the Clinical Workshop shrank to a single day. A surprising amount of advice circulating online (and in older WhatsApp groups) still describes the previous version.

3

Confusing APC assessment with AHPRA registration

Passing APC’s Clinical Workshop doesn’t mean you can start working. AHPRA registration is a separate application after APC certifies you, and skipping ahead of that sequence is illegal, not just inadvisable.

4

Treating the Capability Assessment as a formality

It’s a live, open-book oral exam over video call, not paperwork you can rush through. Candidates who don’t rehearse clinical reasoning out loud beforehand often freeze on the scenario questions.

5

Not budgeting for the full pathway cost and timeline upfront

APEP fees are staged across roughly nine months, and it’s easy to underestimate the total when you’re only looking at the next stage’s fee. Plan against the full pathway cost, not stage by stage.

Avoid These Mistakes: Check My Profile First

Not keen on sitting an exam? The UK’s HCPC route recognises Indian BPT/MPT qualifications through documentation alone, no written or practical exam. Compare it against Australia on our UK registration guide if timelines matter more to you than starting salary.

Australia vs UAE vs UK for Indian Physiotherapists

Australia isn’t automatically the right call for every candidate. Here’s how it stacks up against the two other markets we get asked about most.

What Australian Registration Costs, Overall

APC’s current published APEP fee runs to AUD 7,814 in total, covering the Eligibility Assessment, Cultural Safety Training, Written Assessment, Capability Assessment and Clinical Workshop combined. AHPRA registration is billed separately once you’re through APC.

~9 months at APC’s fastest pace, 9–14 months in practice

That figure doesn’t include IELTS/OET fees, or flights and accommodation for your one-day Clinical Workshop trip to Melbourne. Exchange rates move, so we don’t quote a fixed INR figure here.

Before you pay APC, know where you stand. A failed application, an incorrectly certified document or an unprepared Capability Assessment can cost you months and thousands in fees. We review your profile against APC’s current criteria first, so you’re not finding out something won’t clear a stage after you’ve already paid for it. Check my eligibility

How Akademyfi Guides Your APC/APEP Application

Australia’s pathway changed significantly in 2025. The Capability Assessment moved remote and the Clinical Workshop shrank to one day, and a lot of guidance online still describes the old version. We track the current APEP structure directly against APC’s own guidance, so the plan we give you matches what’s actually asked for today.

That starts with your documents. We check degree certificates and transcripts against APC’s certification format before you submit anything, which is the single most common reason applications get sent back. From there, the same consultant stays with your file through every stage: preparing you for the live oral Capability Assessment with mock sessions rather than reading material, and timing your Melbourne trip and visitor visa around your confirmed Clinical Workshop date.

One consultant tracks your file from Eligibility Assessment through AHPRA registration, not a rotating support queue.

If something in your profile won’t clear a stage, we tell you before you pay the fee for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about physiotherapy registration in Australia.

Yes. BPT is recognised by the Australian Physiotherapy Council. Alongside your degree, APC weighs your clinical experience, registration standing and English scores together, so how much experience you need depends on your individual profile rather than a fixed number. MPT graduates may also apply, and their higher qualification can support the Capability Assessment component. Send us your profile and we’ll tell you honestly where you stand.

Yes. AHPRA requires proof of English proficiency. The minimum requirement is IELTS 7.0 overall with no individual band below 7.0, or OET Grade B in all four sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). Under the current AHPRA English-language standard, test results are generally accepted for 2 years from the test date, but this standard is reviewed periodically, so confirm the current validity period on AHPRA’s website before booking your test.

APC states the fastest candidates complete the full APEP pathway: Eligibility Assessment through to Clinical Workshop in around 9 months. Most Indian applicants take 9–14 months once you factor in Written Assessment preparation time (exams run four times a year) and Clinical Workshop scheduling in Melbourne.

The Clinical Workshop is a one-day, face-to-face session at APC’s Simulation Lab in Melbourne: it’s the only stage of APEP that requires travel to Australia. It’s run as a training-style day rather than a formal exam, giving you hands-on feedback on clinical skills before your final APC certification and AHPRA registration.

No. You cannot work as a physiotherapist in Australia until you have completed the full APC APEP pathway and received AHPRA registration. Working without AHPRA registration as a physiotherapist in Australia is illegal.

Yes. Physiotherapy is on Australia’s Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), reflecting strong national demand. Regional and rural areas particularly have high demand with added incentives for physiotherapists willing to work outside major cities.

APC (Australian Physiotherapy Council) assesses whether overseas-qualified physiotherapists meet Australian standards through the APEP pathway. AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) grants the actual registration to practise. You complete APC assessment first, then apply to AHPRA for registration.

Both BPT and MPT graduates are eligible for APC registration. MPT holders may feel more confident in the Capability Assessment’s clinical reasoning questions due to their advanced training, but the assessment framework treats both equally. What matters most is how clearly you can talk through clinical decisions in the live oral exam.

You can retake it: most candidates who fail do so on their second attempt after reviewing the specific domains they scored lowest on. There’s a mandatory waiting period between attempts and a fresh fee each time, so it’s worth budgeting 4–5 months of dedicated MCQ practice before your first sitting rather than treating it as a trial run.

The UK’s HCPC route is usually faster: 4 to 6 months, documentation only, no exam. Australia’s APC/APEP pathway takes about 9 months at best (often 9–14 months in practice) but pays significantly more and opens a PR pathway that HCPC registration in the UK doesn’t offer on its own. The right choice depends on whether you’re optimising for speed or long-term settlement.
