Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions about international physiotherapy registration, exams, licensing, and working abroad as an Indian physiotherapist.

General Questions

The first step is always an eligibility assessment. Your qualifications, years of experience, and current registration status determine which pathway is available to you. We recommend starting with a free eligibility check where we assess your profile and map the best route for your specific situation.

Most English-speaking countries require proof of English proficiency. Australia (APC/AHPRA) accepts IELTS Academic (minimum 7.0 in each band) or OET (minimum B in each sub-test). The UK (HCPC) requires IELTS Academic with at least 7.0 overall and 6.5 in each section, or OET with grade B. Ireland (CORU) requires IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with no band below 6.5. The UAE (DHA/DOH) may accept IELTS Academic or OET depending on your educational background.

Timelines vary significantly by country. Australia (APC pathway): typically 6–12 months from application to registration. UAE (DHA): approximately 3–6 months including exam and licensing. UK (HCPC): around 4–8 months depending on document verification. Ireland (CORU): can take 6–12 months or longer due to assessment queues.

In most cases, yes — but verification is required. Indian BPT degrees from recognized universities are generally accepted by international licensing bodies. However, the licensing body will assess whether your curriculum and clinical hours meet their standards.

Costs vary by country. Australia: APC assessment fees AUD 1,200–2,500 plus AHPRA registration. UAE: DHA exam and licensing fees approximately AED 7,000–10,000. UK: HCPC application fee around 456 GBP. Ireland: CORU application fee approximately 500 EUR. Total costs typically range from 1–3 lakh INR depending on the country and pathway.

Most licensing bodies do not impose an upper age limit for registration itself. However, visa categories for skilled migration often have age-related eligibility criteria. For example, Australia’s skilled migration visas generally require applicants to be under 45 years of age.

Australia

No. You must be registered with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia via the Australian Physiotherapy Council (APC) assessment process to practice as a physiotherapist in Australia. Working without registration is illegal.

The Australian Physiotherapy Council (APC) is the body that assesses internationally qualified physiotherapists. AHPRA is the national regulator that manages registration once you have been assessed. You first go through APC assessment, then apply to AHPRA for registration.

The APC Written Assessment is a 3-hour, 150-question multiple-choice exam testing your theoretical knowledge across all areas of physiotherapy practice. It is the first step in the APC Standard Assessment Pathway. The exam is computer-based and held at test centers globally, including in India.

UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi & Other Emirates)

Generally, no. Physiotherapists applying through DHA must pass the DHA physiotherapy exam. DOH in Abu Dhabi has a similar requirement. There are no permanent exemptions for Indian-qualified physiotherapists.

The DHA Physiotherapy Exam is a computer-based test with 100 MCQs covering musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiopulmonary specialties. Preparation should include reviewing standard physiotherapy textbooks and practicing with sample questions.

The UAE has three main healthcare licensing authorities: DHA (Dubai), DOH (Abu Dhabi), and MOH (all other emirates). Each has its own licensing exam and registration process.

United Kingdom

The HCPC registration process involves: submitting an online application, providing English proficiency evidence, document verification, a standards of proficiency assessment, and if required, a period of supervised practice. The process typically takes 4–8 months.

No, you do not need a job offer to apply for HCPC registration. However, having HCPC registration significantly improves your employability in the UK.

Ireland

CORU is Ireland’s multi-profession health regulator. Indian physiotherapists must go through CORU’s qualifications assessment process. The process can take 6–12 months. Once registered, you gain full rights to practice in Ireland.

CORU accepts IELTS Academic with a minimum overall score of 7.0 and no individual band below 6.5. They also accept OET with a minimum grade of B in each sub-test.

Gulf Countries (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman)

No. You must obtain a license from the relevant health authority. Saudi Arabia requires SCFHS licensure, Qatar requires QCHP licensing. Each has its own exam and documentation requirements.

The UAE, particularly Dubai (DHA), is generally considered the most accessible Gulf destination. The exam structure is well-defined and there is high demand for physiotherapists.

Exams & English Proficiency

Typically: attested degree certificates, detailed academic transcripts, a letter confirming curriculum and clinical placement hours, and accreditation verification. Documents may need to be attested by a notary public and the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.

Usually not. In most cases, you should begin the registration process before applying for a visa. Having professional registration makes you more attractive for employer-sponsored visas.

With proper documentation and exam preparation, the majority of Indian physiotherapists who meet eligibility criteria successfully obtain registration. Working with experienced guidance professionals significantly increases your chances.
